I haven't always had trouble with panic attacks.  They started when I quit drinking a couple of years ago, and in my humble opinion have played a key role in a couple of relapses I've had into drunkeness.  I've tried all sorts of different techniques for riding them out (medication included).  I find the best way for me is to imagine a house inside my head.  The place is filth, dust everywhere food on the floor, this is one gross mother.  The next step is to clean the house, top to bottom, room to room.  Usually about halfway through the kitchen my heart rate is back to normal, and by the time I reach the bedroom I can start going about business as usual.  I don't know what it is about this technique that works, but it does for me.  I stole the term from a childrens book but I call it the liars palace.
