Thanks for sharing your memories of Okinawa with me. It sounds like a most interesting & beautiful place. Maybe someday I'll get the chance to visit.

Well, you were to small to have appreciated much even if you were out of that dingy apartment. However, I am sure your dad remembers the tropical moist heat most of the year and the sudden 5 to 30 minute rains that can happend several times a day for the summer and spring. Then there is the chill windy weather of fall and winter.

All the island is green year round just like Hawaaii.

Palm trees are beside pine trees, briar bushes are entwined by wild vines that include morning glory in purple or white blooms. Banana and mango trees are everywhere. And the 6 inch wide shiney black spider that has bright yellow dots builds beautiful webs between the banana trees.

Terrible lethal snakes that they call the "habu" slither by and the local family of mongoose attack them. We had our resident "attack mongoose" that saved our lives several times.

The views of the ocean from house, plane, boat, or hill top is always a breathtaking sight of many bright blues and spots where one can see all the way to the bottom because of the clarity.

Once a year all the town people gather on the beaches. The head man and the counselors of each town gather under their prefecture flag and they enjoy watching a few hundred ancient canoe-like ships decorated in brilliant array.

The ships are powered by oarsmen and when they reach the shore there is a martial arts style dance with wonderful drumers.

I can share a lot of interesting things about Okinawa but I thought to share this little bit this time and see what you think.
I really don't remember it. Only a very vague memory of a very dingy little apartment.
