I Have Been to Korea
The first time was in July, 1951. Arrived just after Bob Hope left, the ground was littered and we camped on the ground that night. The next day rode a train to the front lines and then slept in a bunker that night. The next morning I went with the guy I was replacing to lay a new telephone line to the front where our troops were under attack. It was in the Hamburger Hill, Pork Chop Hill, etc area. Along the path a booby trap went off beside me, spraying me with metal. I never made it to the front lines. Luckily, it was home made so I kept all my body parts, just had enough metal in me not to make it through a metal detector. After a series of hospitals, xrays and surgery I was flown to Japan. I took my discharge there and many years later, came back to Korea to establish a supply depot for repairing spy boat engines used by the CIA and other clandestine operations. I took some college courses while in Korea the second time and returned to the USA in 1959. Haven't had the opportunity to go back but got a medal from the Korean Government a couple of years ago.
