Recently Diagnosed

Hi, I've just been diagnosed 2 years ago with Benign Essential Tremor after suffering the shakiness for 5 months. Everybody kept saying is was anxiety.

I am finding it hard to come to terms with and accept that I will have this for the rest of my life. Does anybody else feel like this?

Mine gets so much worse when I do physical things, even walking, housework, gardening and after a bath! I shake for about 2/3 hours after a bath.

Can anybody give me any advice?

I completely understand your feelings! I was diagnosed when I was 39 and pretty much suffered a complete nervous breakdown thinking it was something a lot more sinister like brain cancer so quickly saw a doctor who referred me to a neurologist and put me at ease that its not 'fatal' just bloody frustrating and socially embarrassing when you have to do manual things with your hands like put a key in a lock or put your credit card in the eftpos machine!! My head shakes side to side and hands both shake so I just try to make the best of things and think positive and managed to hold down my job in spite of everything which I think is a miracle in itself! I feel the best thing you can do is to not limit yourself and don't hide yourself away..that's when you get isolated and can lead to depression and then things just spiral out of control. I wish you well and a happy life :)

There is a lot of information on the International Essential Tremor Foundation website,www.essentialtremor.org, including info on common medications, surgical options, support groups, research and more.
