25yrs with liver cirrhosis, been sick since birth. Low salt diet is a must with ascites. But i love the flavour of food. I use lots of fresh herbs, stirfrys with lemon and honey and garlic instead of soy or salty sauces. DON'T AVOID PROTEIN! It's an important thing especially when you are suffering drammatic muscle loss. I have been told many a time that the extra demands on the body caused by liver disease speeds up the way our body processes food. Small regular meals whenever you are hungry, insuring high protein is important. I am currently waiting for a liver transplant and will not survive without it. In the meantime my specialists have told me to eat regular small meals, including something small before going to bed (even if that's 10pm at night) to give your body something to work with when your sleeping. Nausea often makes it hard to do this. so i have nutrient powder and protein powder i add to yogurt or fruit or soup when i can't manage much. Talk to your hospital if your are interested in this. They cost a packet from a chemist but they are also available through hospital pharmacy's at a discount rate with a doctors prescription.

Exercise is also very important, but low impact and low intensity. On doctors suggestions i got a treadmill which i walk on and hold light weights (cardio and weight baring exercise is important, liver disease can effect bone density).. But i have been told not to run! Too much strain on the body. BIKE SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA.

As for doctors given little in the way of info, i have spent my whole life dealing with the health system with the support of my mother also. And quite often it is hard to get the information needed. My advice, ask lots of questions. Take responsibility of your own health and get the answers you need. It's only too clear sometimes that a doctor closes the file at the end of clinic and doesn't think of it again until the file arrives back on their desk next time. I have found that i get more questions answered by the clinic nurse and the social worker at the hospital. Both can be contacted by email. They can answer questions about diet and exercise and what to expect from patient experience, and if they can't they normally can get in contact with someone who does know.

I hope some of this helps. Best of luck with managing your illness. Be sure to let us know any tips that work for you. :)

59 with cirrhosis , hello i have been doing alot of research on this disease.i found an article recently posted just this month as a matter of fact that states that TURMERIC or CURCUMIN wich is the main ingredient in some asian cooking has reversed liver damage in rats ,also it claims to block chemichles that promote inflamation and slows down the procces of scarring . this herb has been used in the past for many other health problems.i found me a jar of 100 capsules 500 mg for 22 bucks at local GNC however it best to discus any type of herbal remady with your doc wich i have yet done. talk to your doc about excercise bike,i read an article that states it can cause portal vein pressure to increase and possibly bleeding.i have also heard that Alpha Lipoic Acid, Selenium and milk Thistle taken together has dramaticly reversed liver damage in humans in clinicle trials. james

I have cirrhosis from Hep C. No health insurance but my doc gave me various diuretic meds and saw me a few times for free. He is a GP and has known me for 15 yrs. Prior to losing insurance my Gastro never told me anything except lose weight. I lost 45 lbs in 10 days the first time I used the diuretics. My GP said avoid salt and protein as protein creates amonia and can affect thinking and balance since it goes into the brain. I've been trying to follow his guidelines with varying success. but I can't afford hospital procedures right now.
