Claustrophobia

I have claustrophobia.  Over the years it seems to come and go. Recently though ( in the last two years ), it has gotten worse.  I now totally avoid situations that  trigger it.  I never use elevators.

I was receiving some therapy for it a few years ago, but still I have it.

So where to I begin to address it... I have used imaging in the past that that seems to work the best.  Also riding an elevator with someone I trust (someone smart enough to get us out if the elevator broke down) has decreased the anxiety significantly.

The thought of jail leaves me  with a feeling of dread.  I have thought about volunteering in a prison but at this time could not do so.  There is this sense of others in control that is definitely a part of the problem.  So the trust issues are big.

My symptoms at their worst give me the sense of being in a  tomb.  Most likely some unconscious stuff here.  I just want to have a sense of control and the confidence that comes with it.

Also, so what if I am not in control?  How can I deal with that?  I have used prayer and being prayed for by others when I know I have to confront the phobia. This has worked situationally on many occasions.

Looking forward to advice and comments.

I am Innovation Design Engineering student. Currently I am working on my final project, which is related to people who suffer from claustrophobia. Therefore I am looking for people who suffer from this phobia in order to ask couple of questions (survey)
Would you be willing to fill my short survey?
Thank you,
Nicholas

Wow after reading your story it sounds all so familar. I will not get on any elevators anymore. I have even went as far as researching to find an elevator key that can open the door if you ever get stuck. I have no idea why this mental disorder takes over so much of my life but it makes it very difficult being around family that does not have clausterphobia to understand why I act so crazy.
