What Tto Know About Getting Dental Implants

F irst and most important know that A LOT of dentists learned how to put in implants during a long weekend seminar. These are not the people you want doing this procedure in your mouth! I go to a dentist who is a Prostodontist, he went to school for three extra years to learn to be the best at this procedure. He does regular dental work as well to supplement his income because so many people in the area where I live will have a tooth pulled and then DO NOTHING about the space. My main problem was that my teeth vibrated when I talked because they were so loose but I also had soreness from chewing. I have a lot of very short roots...like the root is usually much longer than the actual part of the tooth you see, follow? Many of my roots are shorter than the actual tooth. This is a combination of a congenital (inherited) situation and poor orthodontia - moving my teeth too fast. Like the other story in this group the first problem I had was with #7 and #10, hers were missing, I still had mine but the roots were so short they vibrated the most. Now, these implants don't work for everybody so I chose not to gamble on two at once, I had #7 done first. Number 7 is celebrating it's 15th anniversary this November 19th, I could chew rocks! Since then I've had six more done, five on top, #10, #8, #2, #3 and #14. I don't know the number on the bottom one but it is my bottom right front. I still need to have the bottom left front done plus #9, top left center. I have awful teeth but I am vain about them, they look fine and one of the things I won't EVER do is spit my teeth into a cup for any medical procedure I might have in the future...my mother-in-law had to do that...I thought it must have been so humiliating. Too funny that both of my parents died in their sixties with all of their teeth in tact and mine started going at 34. I have an uncle, 65 who's had his first one done. When I told him about the short roots he said "Join the club!" so I guess other family members know about this problem. Thankfully my son didn't get his tooth roots from me :)

It hurts to get it done but it's not as bad as a gynecological exam in my book, although for a few days afterward you feel like you've been punched in the mouth while you only have to get over the violation of a pelvic exam.

Whatever you do, don't let a fly by night quack dentist do them, find yourself a prostodontist!
