Low Self-esteem

Hi everyone, I'm 16 and have type 1 duane's in my right eye although it's kind of turned into type 3 since my surgery a year ago as I have limited abduction and adduction. I want further surgery as my eye is still off centre and my eyelid is droopy so I'll see how that goes... People always stare and I used to get bullied when I was younger as my duane's has always been very noticeable, even since my surgery. It really gets me down and I just start crying when I catch sight of my eyes in the mirror, I'm just self-conscious! I would like another operation to align my eyes in the middle, I'm not bothered about risks of even more double vision or abduction/adduction etc!!

About how much would the surgery cost because I have been considering this for a while now because I have type 3 in my left eye and type two in my right and my right is extremely noticeable and is constantly wandering on its own. So I was just wondering about the cost to help with the decision.

My operation was done free on the NHS so I have no idea how much it would cost normally, i'm sorry :-(

well thanks anyway

We're all self-conscious, don't worry. I know that you're just trying to be normal, we all want that at some point in our lives. People still comment on my eyes now, but I don't let it get me down. I might need to have surgery too but mine will be because of my neck aches and headaches. How bad is the surgery? As for not liking the way you look, it's whats on the inside that counts and my guess is that you are a lovely person on the inside because you have empathy because of your Duane's and you'll never be as horrible as those shallow people who are cruel to you. Some people that stare only do so because they don't understand, so maybe you can explain it? Anyway, good luck and I hope your surgery goes well.

Thank you for this comment, it's really cheered me up! I would definitely recommend the surgery because it helped so much with misalignment and I also suffered terrible neck aches and now I don't get them anymore! The only problem is that there's a risk of double vision; I used to only see double when looking to the right but now I get it whether I'm looking to the right or to the left. Even so, I'm really happy I went through with it. Anyway thank you, I'm going to the eye hospital in April/May so I should hopefully be having further surgery by the end of the year.

Thank you for the advise about surgery and I hope everything at the hospital goes okay for you :)
