Steroids, Homeopathic, Naturopathic, Tcm (acupuncture)

I am 36 years old and currently battling the worst skin condition of my life. I get about 2 hours of sleep per night when my skin is not burning and itching like crazy. This has affected every aspect of my life and is severely debilitating.

Background information:

I have been actively involved in the natural health community for the past 6 years and have sought the advice of almost every professional out there. In addition I have consulted with 6 dermatologists (who I might add provided no resolve other).

I have tried absolutely everything....steroid creams are of ZERO help to anyone - that is fact. This includes hydrocortisone, beta, dexa and non-steroidals like Protopic and Elidel. I have also been on 3 rounds of oral Prednisone (10-20mg per day)which I would not recommend to anyone. Weaning off Prednisone was/is a nightmare - the eczema flares up 3 times as bad as the original ailment....and this is something I would not wish on my worst enemy. For this reason and many other negative long term effects - I do not recommend Prednisone if you can at all help it. If you are on prednisone, I recommend a good vitamin d/k and DHEA supplement in addition to Adrenal Glandulars.

I have invested over $40,000 in Naturopathic, Homeopathic, Acupuncture, and TCM without any resolve including Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique (NAET), Ozone Therapy, Oxygen Therapy, Hydrogen Peroxide Therapy and Iodine Therapy as well as anti-Candida and elimination diets. Supplementation of Vitamin D/K, Probiotics, fish oil, aloe, vitamin C, magnesium orotate and many other supplements...

In addition to seeking out expertise in subject areas (professionals), I am an avid researcher and I use PubMed database - physicians and researchers rely on this database to look up evidence based peer reviewed and meta studies.

The last study I read led me to research UVA and UVB therapy. My first session was yesterday and I am praying that this works...I have no other options left. From the studies I have read it has been a godsend for many people. It is best to look for a tanning bed that uses an electronic ballast vs. magnetic ballast.

I would welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone on here and make some new friends to share tips and talk about this ailment. Maybe if some of us brainstorm we can find solutions? Message me personally if you would like to talk.

Ok, I have to admit - I was hoping for some more feedback and suggestions. Thank you Scaredface for commenting :).

I tried the regular tanning beds for exactly one month using the least powerful bed in the salon at 5 minutes every other day being careful to watch that the skin did not burn.

The result of this was:

1) Much less itching.
2) Much less inflammation of the skin
3) Healing of the middle digits (fingers). Prior to the tanning...the fingers would weep and open up painfully.
4) Much less of a burning feeling around the neck.
5) The redness (ring around the neck) faded.

Being hopeful, and because tanning beds in salons can be dangerous because of the magnetic ballast and also because they yield mostly UVA light with little UVB light...I decided to purchase the 1000 Series UVB Narrowband (UVB-NB) Photo Therapy unit from Solarc Systems out of Barrie, Ontario for $3000. The 1000 series is the only unit that uses an electronic ballast. They supply photo therapy units to hospitals all across Canada.

I started UVB-NB on March 1 at 56 seconds front side, 56 seconds back side. This was repeated every second day. It was said that it may take 30-40 sessions before results are noticed. I gradually increased to 1 min 20 seconds on each side over the course of the month.

For those that do not know, UVB-NB is the choice of dermatologists and it is the same light spectrum that creates Vitamin D in the body.

The result of this was (disappointing):

1) Itching increased.
2) Redness increased.
3) Burning increased
4) Thumbs on both hands including the space between index finger and thumb started to itch, weep, and bleed. I have actually never had such bad skin on my thumbs before this.
5) Inflamed skin around eyelids, neck and ears....peeling and flaking.

What does all of this mean? UVB NB has been raved about by many people, including positive results in the research community as well.

A complete remission was achieved last summer while spending a great deal of time outside in the sun and fresh air - walking up to 6 km per day.

Could we derive that the body needs both UVB, UVA, exercise and fresh air to achieve remission from this hell? Why did this essentially heal in the summer? Why can't this be duplicated with a phototherapy unit in the winter?

So many questions, so few answers and no money to continue. I am dreading turning to to the world of pharmaceuticals for answers knowing drugs like Humira are experimental and dangerous regarding long term side effects.

I am certain the answer for many if not all of us can be derived from: Sunshine, Fresh Air and Exercise....what is the right formula? I wonder if a tanning bed that provided UVA, UVB Broadband and red light would have a different effect?

Hey there, the work that you've done and time and money you've invested is to be respected and commended, you most definitely have my admiration. I don't know how I can help but I just wanted to say that I hope your research gives the answers we are all looking for and good luck with your future endeavors, we are all there with you.

Thanks for the support and comment :)
