My Ibs History

I was diagnosed with IBS twelve years ago.  First it started with sharp pains in the abdomen ... like someone was driving a knife into me.  I can't tell you how many trips to the emergency room I took.

Eventually I found a medication that got rid of the abdominal pains.  However I had another nasty side effect.  I was going to the bathroom upwards of 18 times a day.  It wasn't until just recently that I read research that indicated a particular type of medication may help.  I convinced my doctor to let me try it, and it's worked fairly well.  I'm down to only about 3 times a day now.

Fess up p l e a s e! what is the magic medication? Velvetflow Thanks.

Wow, I only posted this 4 years ago. LOL.

Nothing magic. It's Amitriptyline (Brand names: Elavil, Endep, Vanatrip). I started out at 25mg per day. Here's my only warning, for the first two weeks on this med (and for 2 weeks after they upped my dosage to 50mg after a couple of years) all i wanted to do was sleep 24 hours a day until my body adjusted to it.

Now, it is an antidepressant, so PLEASE watch out for side effects. Also, when I asked my doctor for it, she said she would go with a different type of antidepressant (there are 3 basic types). I showed her all the research that I had, and convinced her to let me try it.

My GI doctor talked to me about going on an antidepressant for my IBS. I decided not too because of the side effects. I am actually doing better as I watch everything I eat and that has helped me. Glad they are working for you.
