Too Much, Or Too Little?

My sleeping patterns fluctuate (I also have bipolar disorder). I alternate between 12-14 hours of sleep a day (depression) to staying up a few nights without any sleep (hypomania). I cope with sleeping too much easily by taking catnaps when needed and kick-starting lethargy with caffeine or exercise. But nothing helps the occassional insomnia. I've tried sleeping pills, meditation, reading, watching TV, laying in bed trying to relax, etc etc. Eventually I start to sleep regularly again but for those one/two ocassional nights it's tough. For now it's joining this group and writing a story; maybe I should try and find something constructive to concentrate on to fill those sleepless hours, if I can't find a way to get to sleep.
