It's All About the Bananas.

Looking back, I've probably had IBS since I was a teenager. I used to dance, and I'd get so nervous before performances that my stomach would start to rumble... and you know what happened from there. :)

Before I was diagnosed, I went on a date with a guy and we went to the Olive Garden. I love their tiramisu! Unfortunately, I didn't yet know that the cheese in the salad dressing and in the tiramisu triggered my diarrhea. I spent the entire rest of the date in his bathroom! How humiliating. He was really, really nice about it, though.

Since I was diagnosed, I've figured out my usual triggers: dairy products, greasy foods, carbonated drinks (or drinks with a straw), caffeine and stress. I know it could be a lot worse, and I'm grateful that it isn't! I explain that it's like filling a glass with water. The more triggers I consume, the more water I put in the glass. I can keep eating or drinking my triggers until the glass overflows. When it does, that's when the grumbling, gas and diarrhea start. Luckily, when I'm not very stressed my glass is bigger. :)

My doctor recommended eating bananas to help settle my stomach. Believe it or not, it really works! I've actually eaten a banana instead of taking Immodium when my stomach is acting up, and it really does work! Unless my stomach is REALLY bad, anyway. But when it's really bad, even Immodium won't work. Lately, though, I seem to be alternating between diarrhea and a little bit of constipation. I sort of miss the good old days of having normal bowel movements! For now I'll take the constipation part of it, though, because at least then I don't have to interrupt my life by dropping everything and running to the bathroom.

It's a little embarrassing the first time I have to explain my stomach problems to a guy I'm dating, though, especially when it's because my stomach is acting up. So embarrassing to stink up the place when I have gas or to keep running to the bathroom when I have diarrhea! :( I also hate it when I'm doing something important or fun and I have to put life on hold so I can hang out in the bathroom for a while. It sucks when it happens at work when it's busy, for example, or when I'm out doing something fun with my friends or family.

But, what can you do? You just deal with it and remind yourself that there are worse things you could be dealing with.

BANANAS have different stages, are you eating it when it is a bit green, completely yellow or all brown?

Glad i come across this post am a 26yr old guy suffered from ibs since i was 14 trier everything the dr gave me only time it set it off for me was at night or i would get half hrs sleep and there i was sitting on toilet all night anyway i read this spost and started to feel ibs pain starting up on me ate a banana and its calm my ibs down also i usally take 2 ibropfon 2 paracetomal and 2 buscopan tablets and usally works so i can get a good nights sleep

i SEEM TO HAVE, IBS with alternating constipation and diarrhea. I think most people have this, if its chronic. I notice certain foods like fatty.,greasy food triggers, caffeine in soft drinks is also known to trigger it as well. Yes, bananas do help, but i dont eat enough to have a long term effect. Also i noticed when i get food poisioning, the ibs becomes worst, it makes the diarrhea more frequent, like you have to go all the time, it only last for 1-2 days then it returns to normal(ibs) stools. Sometimes the diarrhea becomes watery and loose stool as well, i also trained my body, that i need to go toilet everyday when i wake up, at a specific time, earlier will just give me a few hours of constipation. Constipation is somewhat helpful, because you dont go often, but when you do need to go, adominal pain and discomfort is a wallop

I'm not even sure any more what my triggers are. 20 years ago it was fatty foods, red meat, and caffeine. I had a period of remission when my gastroparesis first started. Now the IBS-D is back with a vengeance and even fat-free liquids are triggering spasms. When things calm down, I'll be interested in trying the bananas. I can usually digest pureed banana so they form the base of a lot of smoothies.

I will be trying the bananas for sure!!! BUT for those who want to know another tip, I have lately been FAKING tooth aches just to be able to have TYLONAL 3. why? because the codeine does wonders toy stomach!! the tylonal plugs me up for the day!! in the morning before I do anything I drink a coffee then run to the bathroom once I'm done, it's 2 tylonal 3. after my shower I feel 100% ready to leave the house and not have to worry. I wish my doctor knew that this worked and I wouldnt have to go to all the walk in clinics and fake tooth aches. I'm not a "drug head" I don't do any drugs hell, i dont even drink! i found the tylonal works only because after i had my wizdom teeth removed i was prescrbed them. I can also eat my triggered foods while on tylonal and not worry!! if anyone else has noticed codeine to be this affective let me know I'm not the only one

Awesome post. You seem so positive about it. Ill definitely be trying bananas but not too many because they also cause D !

also i can recommend Senex3 lactobacillus rosell-52 and bifidobacterium rosell-175. isnt medicine just probiotics. and tempolib wich is trimebutine of long action 300mg tablets. are the best!

hi i'm addict to my food triggers: coke, cheese. etc. before i ate chiken and steak but with paroxotyne i could control a lot the problem. but i have to confess that i started eating more and i gained weight but look more healthy. everybody said that. little fat but healthy. humm i started swimming classes. and symptoms reduced more! so i can recomend that and shrink. yeap.

thank you so much for posting this made me feel so much better im not alone, im thankfull my husband understand my problem but it does suck we cant really go any where cause i never know when i will get sick im going to try the bananas i hope it helps me so i can live a some what normal life

Everything you say I agree with and sympathise. I'm grateful I did not have all these troubles when I was young and falling in love and dating etc. This gruesome and embarrassing illness came to me late in life.

I am so glad to have found this! Just made me realize I am not the only one who is going through embarrassing moments which at times seem never ending. I am a college student and I am in my fourth year and I must say this year has been the worst year! I had to leave classes and not go to classes to avoid being embarrassed but at the end of the day I just figure there are worse things people go through at some part of the world and I should not feel too bad about it even though at some moments, for example when you are seated in a crowd and your stomach acts up one too many times, it might seem at that moment that it was soo embarrassing you could die but NOO....we all go through it and it just all about keeping it positive and hope someday there will be a natural cure.. keep your heads up!!! :)

@ bundtgirlsmum, kindly please advise what time of day you take your probiotic; and also name; and whether on an empty stomach? Bananas do not work for me. Mine is triggered by so much. I did raw living foods for two days and my colon was fine. but the minute I added meat it got all wonky. Banana's have been tasting odd for around two weeks and finally I almost gagged eating it (as I usually do) with my oats in the morning. So I am kicking banana to the curb! Yuck! I think it's gonna make a HUGE difference. Mine is most active in the morning. And sometimes (often) delays me getting to work on time. Sometimes my colon is good for two whole weeks, then fires up outta nowhere. Not so cool. I think I should start keeping a food diary again. I don't have C much. Mostly D when it hits and won't go for two days if a bad bout of real emptying out D is over. Thanks for all your sharing everyone, Most helpful. Be well and get better. Def taking up raw food for now. Best unmedicated help so far. Best wishes.

I suffered so badly with IBS that I had become housebound. A chance visit to a Chiropractor who told me to get on to a probiotic capsule saved my live. That and his other advise to 'get rid of the wheat' are the best things I could have done. That was 6 months ago, now I run a half marathon distance twice a week, dance 3 days a week, walk everywhere and have started a gluten and wheat free baking business. I can now eat Bananas lol.

@ilovemybodywrap, that product, Regular, aside from the fact that it appears you're biased because you sell it, looks like a good product overall. However, Cascara Sagrada is not generally indicated for daily use as it is a stimulant laxative and cause dependence and lack of bowel motility (thereby causing more constipation issues!), along with some other possible side effects from long-term use. Personally, I always keep the herb on hand for emergencies, because I think it works great (along with some extra magnesium and a probiotic), and because I know I tend to occasionally eat the things I shouldn't, that cause the IBS-C to act up. And dandelion is also a great herb for a diuretic, preserving electrolyt balance. But I don't think your product should be taken every day.

I had what I thought was IBS, but in fact it was a gluten allergy. So for years, I would try to "constipate" myself by consuming bread, but in fact I was making things much, much worse. I'm now gluten free, and life is so much better!!

Oh my goodness, I can relate to all of this! Ever since I was little I have had digestive issues and growing up I've had so many embarrassing moments. I was actually diagnosed with IBS when I was 30. The doctor said I could get on some medication, and he gave me information on changing my diet with high fiber, etc. I didn't want to get on any medication and I thought I could take care of it naturally by what I ate. But I couldn't. I would cry in the bathroom because it was just so painful. It would go from loose to hard as a rock. But then my friend told me about an all natural product called Regular. She gave me some samples of it. Basically you take 1-3 pills before you go to bed. It gently cleanses and balances the colon. The next morning after I took it I had a huge bowel movement, and then I had one in the middle of the day. I take it every night. Every since I've taken it, I haven't had any problems whatsoever! It has completely changed my life.... You can buy it online at www.ibsfreetoday.com. Maybe it will help you out too!

I wish IBS was that easy. When I had my first spasm of the colon I cried on the bathroom floor thinking I was about to die. This is comming from a 175 almost 6 foot 13 year old. From that point to now 33 it has been one long hellish ride. There was no d. or c. just the odd bout of massive intense pain that left me breathless after going to the bathroom and having my heart go cold. The peak was 5 years of D. I went from 195 to 135 of bones. I didnt know what was causing all this, didnt know untill 30 years old. Prior to all that D i was eating lots of yogurt. iDuring the 6 years of D I was trying every herb and bogus chinese herb. I almost ended up dead in the ER one night.. Plain and simple IBS is the worst. I would rather go thru a few years of cancer and call it good, not to mention it has ruined my sex life, and any hopes for anything. <br />
What ever the cause ( had an injection of anal antibotics a few years before all this) or some cow bacteria, IBS can challenge the very sanity or all exsitance!

I hope you don't mind me posting here. I'm an Associate Producer with MTV Networks and am currently working on a documentary following young people who are suffering from a rare or embarrassing medical condition. You may or may not be familiar with MTV's True Life -- it's a long-running, award winning documentary series that seeks to have young people share their stories, in their own words. The format is strictly first person, which is to say that we don't filter the voices of our subjects through narrators or any similar third parties. All we do is follow them; it's our hope that by allowing these people to use their own voices to tell their stories, and communicating directly with their peers, we can impact the way people interact and engage with the world they live in. One of the themes we’re currently exploring for this particular episode is what it is like to be a young person living with IBS We are interested in finding people who are currently seeking treatments and are learning more about their condition each day. We realize that a number of young people are suffering from IBS and we would like to offer them the opportunity to tell their story in a documentary setting. If this sounds like something that you might consider, I'd love to give you more information about this project embarrassed @ mtvn. com Thank you so much for any assistance that you can offer. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Kristen

I have IBS, too. I've left a few pairs of undies in the bathroom at work ... just threw them away in the feminine disposal. But bananas don't work for me. In fact, they make it much worse. It's so interesting to me that they help you!
