I Have Lost a Beloved Pet
A few years ago, I was volunteering at an elementary school when I met an angel in rat form, whom I later named Tabitha Twitchet. I liked her from the beginning, as I've always been an animal person, but nothing really unique happened until she became deathly ill.
She had just given birth to her first litter, when she went into convulsions. I was not present when this was taking place, but the teacher I worked with filled me in when I came to the school two days later. Tabitha refused to eat or drink, and reacted violently whenever anyone tried to help her. Everyone except me. The teacher told me I could try, but not to get my hopes up, as it was almost certain that little Tabitha wasn't going to make it. Something from deep within told me to try anyway. Somehow, Tabitha allowed me to touch her, and within an hour, I was able to get her to eat and drink a little.
That was when our bond solidified, and after seeing this beautiful bond, the teacher gave Tabitha to me. Tabitha was my pet for two and a half years. She was the sweetest, gentlest little rat I've ever seen, and I miss her terribly. Her favorite place to be was on my shoulders, surveying the room with her wise eyes. In her last days, I could tell that she was fighting to stay alive for me. That she didn't want to leave me, but that it was time for her to go. She didn't leave this world until I told her that it was okay for her to go, and that I would love her always. Less than an hour later, she was gone. Her story deserves to be told, as she truly was a blessing, and one of my dearest friends.
