I lost my dog a few weeks ago too...people dont understand until they've lost an animal. Please accept my condolences.

I can relate. My pets are so dear to me and when I lose one, it's devastating. I lost both my dogs and the grief was palpable. I'm so sorry for your loss, I do understand. Pets are loyal to a fault and nowhere will we find unconditional love like we can with them.

Hi Welshbabe, I so understand, and I really feel for you. I've never been on one of these sites...but my best friend died two days ago and while my family and friends loved him too ... no-one really understands unless they have loved and lost a pet. Even then... like humans some pets are special. Beautiful souls that improve everything they come into contact with. That's what Pip did for me. My dad got very sick last year and we cared for him at home. My husband left me three weeks before Dad died, and we buried his ashes today. Pippin is the only reason it's been ok to come home, to go to bed, to wake up. I will miss every single thing about him every day. 13 years of unfailing love, loyalty and outrageous cuteness 24 hours a day. If dogs don't get to heaven, then I don't want to go either. Hope you're feeling better.

I know how you feel, welshbabe. I am not much of a dog person, I am more into cats. We had this dog named Baby, for about 11 years. She was a great dog and she always protected us. When she died, I couldn't stop crying and that really surprised me. It's been years since she died and I always remember her. There was no dog like her. My heart goes out to you!!!

I'm sorry for your loss, Welshbabe. You were HIS true and faithful best friend, and he died knowing you loved him and cared enough to let him go. We should all be so lucky when our time comes.

I have been an avid animal person my whole life. Therefore, I have also lost animals along the way. Right now, I have 3 dogs and 4 cats. They are my family! I certainly know the pain of losing one of my family members! But listen--16 years! You must have been a great mom to your dog! Only time will heal your sorrow, but please comfort yourself with the knowledge that your beloved dog always had someone who loved him and cared about him, fed him, played with him, etc. You loved him and made him very happy and he KNEW that! Google the Rainbow Bridge. My sister sent that to me when I lost one of my dogs several years ago. It made me cry, but it did make me feel better!

Please know that there are animal lovers out there who know how you feel and we all want you to feel better. The world needs more people like you, who are kind and loving to animals. Take care.

Thanks for your response cycmcb to welshbabe. I lost my best friend two days ago and I feel heartbroken. But I do need to remember that he knew... he absolutely knew that I adored him. He had a great life of long walks and feather cushions and was the happiest wee pup around. So... then it's just me that I'm sorry for I guess. Probably. But a warm, loving light has gone out in what is a pretty dark time in my life already, and I miss him so very much.

Welshbabe..I'm so very sorry for your loss!

I know that we can come to love our animals just as much as we love any other member of our family as they are part of our family.

I understand how you feel as I've lost a few myself over the years and now prefer to have none.

Although I know that he'll always be in your heart..I hope the pain will lessen with time for you.

    Take care and hugs!

Dear Welsh, I am so sorry for your loss.. My dog died in my arms a little over a year ago--I still can't quite get over it. For about 12 or so years, he was my constant companion. He went everywhere with me and slept right next to my bed. I certainly do understand how you feel. You are young so, after a while, you may want to have another dog. I long for one--but at my age it wouldn't be fair....I have a cat now....If I were to pass on--I don't think the cat would grieve the way a dog does...

Awwww! I am so sorry Welshbabe! That is so sad. :-( I understand completely. Pets can be just like family when you are close to them. I lost a fish when I was about 8 years old. I had her for 4 years. I loved her so much! I hope you feel better and I am so sorry! :-(
