Fantina: My Would-be Little Sister

It was in the summer of 2003, I was 8. At the time I had one younger brother and five little sisters. My mother became pregnant again and the baby was due on November 1, 2003 and I was excited to get another little brother. Then in mid-July my mother go a sonogram done (I think that's how you spell it) and they found out it was a girl. After that I was somewhat less entusiastic about getting another sibling.

On July 26, which was my sister Sarah's third birthday, my mother whose uterus had been weakened by so many pregnancies was in pain. Then she went into labor. My father was about to rush her to the hospital but the nearest hospital is half an hour away and the baby was coming fast so she gave birth to baby Fantina in the bathroom.

She was a happy little child with a head of thick, black hair and large black eyes. Unfortunately, Little Fantina was very weak and her fingers weren't completely formed. For four days all we talked about in the house was Fantina: we were with her 24/7.

On the night of July 30, 2003 she went to sleep and never woke up. The doctor told us that she was lucky to have lived that long and that it should have been a miscarriage. My mother had "Fantina Maria-7/26/03" tattooed on her lower belly and I swore to her that I would name my first daughter Fantina Maria.
