I had a prophylatic bilateral mastectomy two weeks ago at the age of 44. I am scheduled to have my drains removed today. I was surprised by the amount of discomfort. I have not slept more than four hours at a time. I am having a hard time finding a support group to help me deal with the mixed emotions i am having. I always thought i was a strong person who could deal with anything but this sure has challenged me. I would appreciate any suggestions or recomendations to help me through this time.
    thank you

I had a bilateral mastectomy January 2010. I had immediate reconstruction which meant expanders were placed behind the muscle. I suffered an infection which required me to wear a wound vac for several weeks before I could start having the expanders filled. This part of the process was so painful due to the expanders. I had a lot of muscle spasms! Several months later I had my 1st implants put in. Then after waiting several months later I started tattooing for my nipples. I hated how I looked and that made find a new surgeon who I love. She put in new implants did fat grafting and made my nipples look natural. So many emotions happen to you after a mastectomy and you never know how or when they will hit you. There is life and love after a mastectomy. I still have bad days but I am happy to be here and see my kids grow up.

I only had one. I am still dealing with it. I lost my right breast on 1-11-11. I am widowed. 56. I have fought the insurance company from day one. I had it rebuilt. It was painful. I lived. I only wanted to not live and be broke forever...So I dropped my insurance.. Does anyone have their pain in the rebuilt one stop. I can't go to the doctor, (still paying for the removel, even with insurance).

I had a bilateral mastectomy with tissue expanders August 1st. I won't lie to you and tell you its not painful because it is. I will tell you that with the medication its bearable. Take the meds as directed to give your mine as well as your body the time to heal.
