I Have Ovarian Cysts
I have been having severe pain in my right side for several weeks (severe enough to wake me up at night, and prevent me from falling back to sleep). My first doctor misdiagnosed it as PID, and prescribed antibiotics. I frantically called him a week later asking when I should expect the antibiotics to "kick in," and he told me to go to the ER- which is where I discovered I had a 10cm complex cyst inside my right ovary.
I am sharing this story for several reasons, as I am left with many questions following this diagnosis:
1.) The Pain: After the diagnosis, I was sent home with nothing but extra-strength ibuprofen for the pain. Is this typical? The cyst is large enough where it is displacing other organs in my body, and the pain is excruciating. Is there anything I can do at home to cope with this more effectively?
2.) The Expense: I am a recent college grad with no health insurance. Although I've applied for medical assistance in the state where I live, it could be months before it becomes effective if my claim is approved. My trip to the ER already has me stressed beyond belief about the bills I am accruing. Is there any way I can seek treatment in a more cost-effective way?
3.) The Future: I am only 24 years old and newly engaged. Although I had no immediate plans to start a family, it is certainly disheartening to think that it might not be possible. Beyond fertility concerns, I have been unsuccessful in determining the current threat that this cyst poses to my health. Specialists in my area are booked for months in advance, and many do not take individuals without insurance. What is the risk of a 10cm complex cyst (with septations and internal echoes) being malignant at my age? Is it possible it will shrink or go away on its own, or is some type of surgery necessary for this to go away?
I apologize: I began this story with the intent of sharing information, but it appears I have more questions than answers at this point. If you are similarly situated, or have been through something similar in the past and have any advice to offer, it would be greatly appreciated!
