I Have Parsonage Turner Syndrome
I went undiagnosed for three years...original symptoms were the usual...intense shoulder and neck pain followed by what my Dr thought was pneumonia. When the pneumonia did not let up after two courses of antibiotics I was sent to a pulmonologist and finally to a neurologist who diagnosed me with phrenic neuropathy. (The nerve to my diaphragm was not firing.) I had only 50% lung capacity.
Over time my breathing returned to about 70% but my shoulder and neck repeatedly caused pain. I finally went to see a shoulder surgeon who did surgery to repair bone chips and spurs in my shoulder...bad idea...
The trauma of the surgery caused problems in my arm (weakness, atrophy, numbness, paralysis) that could not be explained. Physical therapy was a b&$#@.
Problems with my diaphragm were not curable past 70% but now I knew why.
Back to the neurologist and finally got diagnosed with acute PTS. I work in a prison. Lots of keys and convicts. I have been advised to avoid new trauma at all costs. I have 5 years to retirement...I will go to work. The pain is manageable. Ice works best. I live on Advil and Prilosec.
I won't let this beat me. I look for ways to reduce overuse and trauma to the affected area. I keep plugging along. It was two years before I could sleep in a bed due to the breathing problems. I sleep now.
