Help*my 2 Year Old Has Pectus Carinatum

Hello, I wanted to join this group. I need help. I took her to a doctor and she was given a brace made just for her. However, she cried and I was not strong enough to keep it on. I have it here at home but it has only been used for a few minutes at the doctors office. Now she is 2 1/2 and it seems to be worsening and I am worried for her when she gets older. I have read that I am not to make a big deal about it in front of her so that she does not feel like something is wrong with her. I don't want her to suffer when she gets older and wants to have it corrected. I wish she would not cry and tell me that it hurts and that it is too heavy. Does anyone have any advice?

Hello Marty Isabel,

For our youngest kids like your daughter, I suggest verbally preparing her and working up to wearing the brace.

When you put the brace on put it on with only light pressure and give her a goal of say 2 hours. At the end of the 2 hours then give a reward of a treat or food or something she liks for wearing her brace.

Then tell her she can do it again in two days but it is going to be for 3 hours.

If you try that or something like that, it may help get it on her so she sees it as a good thing and not a bad or paingul thing.

I also add some extra soft padding for the young ones so they feel gentle pressure but not pain then modify the brace over time as she gets more tolerant of the brace.

Hope that helps! Call or email the office anytime.
I hear it hurts when first getting used to the brace. Please stick with the program of wearing the brace, better a bit of pain now than later.

We have brace kids as young as two years old. Our brace is very light weight and for girls comes in 'pretty' pink. The kids think it is something special when they wear it. Glad to help and or look at her current brace. contact me through the website pectusservices.com
