My rats are starting to become more affectionate to me, and one of my girls spent the past hour pretty much sitting on my stomach and crawling around in my lap. She is ok with petting, her sister isn't as comfortable with me yet and still runs back to her cage, nervous. However despite the progress they still won't let me pick them up at all, even the more socialized one. I'm thinking it's because of their negative experiences being handled as a lab rat, as lab rats are basically dangled by their tails to move them quickly.

I want to show them I'm not going to hold them like that and try to get them to climb into my hands to lift them but it's only worked a couple times. Any tips?
