The Mondays: 10 Random Thoughts For the Week of September 21, 2009

Well, this Monday doesn't seem as daunting to me as others, but perhaps that is because of some of this weekend's events.  A few weeks back, I may have taken a jab at Starbucks and baristas everywhere.... today on this special Monday... I want to publicly acknowledge that I take it all back.

This weekend I stopped into a Starbucks at a reasonable hour on a Saturday evening.  This particular Starbucks was near Union Square in San Francisco and there was one particularly interesting homeless person panhandling, rather aggressively, in the store.  This homeless person was about 5'2" and slight in stature.  This young barista, a girl of no more than about 5'3" and all of 100 lbs step from behind the counter, approached the woman and said, politely, "Ma'am, unfortunately I am going to have to ask you to leave as you can't ask for money in the store."  The young lady's statement was immediately greeted with a well planted punch to the face.  Quickly one of the other baristas, a larger man, jumped from the other side of the counter to aide his co-worker.... the same homeless person spun on a dime and managed to bite down on the second barista's hand with the ferocity of a rabid animal.  Mayhem ensued.  Long story short --- too late --- the young lady's nose was broken and the gentleman's hand was ravaged down to the bone requiring aggressive stitches and a tetanus shot.

So to all you Starbucks baristas out there... I am sorry.  Clearly your weekend puts the sense of the Mondays to shame.

OK... time to get to this week's set of random thoughts:

1. That's enough, Kanye.  That's enough.

2. Do you remember when you were a kid, playing Nintendo and it wouldn't work?  You knew just to take the cartridge out, blow on it, pop it back in and that would magically fix the problem.  Every kid in America did that, but how did we all know how to fix the problem?  There was no internet or message boards, no FAQ section.  We just figured it out.  Today's kids are soft.

3. I would rather try to carry 10 plastic grocery bags in each hand than take 2 trips to bring in my groceries.

4. I really do have a hard time distinguishing between boredom and hunger.  It's a fine line.

5. As a driver I hate pedestrians.  As a pedestrian I hate drivers.  But no matter what the mode of transport, I always hate bicyclists.

6. Lady Gaga is starting to make Amy Winehouse look like the well adjusted one.

7. I was going to make you a rum cake for your birthday, but now its just a cake and I'm drunk.

8.  If its September and Macy's and Walgreen's already have Christmas decorations up, when was I supposed to say Happy Halloween?  On the 4th of July?!?

9. I was on a date on Friday night and as I stared across the table into your eyes, I thought.... Smoking, drinking, and you.  Well, two that's two things I love.

10. The only time I look forward to a red light is when I am trying to finish a TEXT!
