I Have Type 1 Diabetes

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 12.

For weeks after a bad ear infection, I drank 300 oz. of water a day, couldn't breathe because of my dry mouth, went to the bathroom 2 times an hour and six times a night and was so weak I could hardly move.

I researched some and convinced my mother to take me to the doctor, I knew I was sick.

By the time we got there, there were a bunch of nurses huddling over me, telling me I needed to go to the emergency room, my blood sugar was over 1000.  My mom drove me there in tears, and I didn't know what was going on.  I was in a very confused state.

Upon getting there, I spent 7 hours in the emergency room because they couldn't get the IV in because I was so dehydrated, I had massive ketones, they couldn't draw blood and they were telling me to stay awake.  I wasn't scared, though.

I got to the diabetes unit around 5pm.  I had an IV in, but my ketones were still massive.  I remember seeing the nurses look in my room and then look away with really sad looks.  It took three days for my ketones to come down to medium.  The night nurse quickly friended me, saying I was the calmest girl she'd ever seen at 12am.  I didn't wake up at the 3am checks, though.  I didn't care for the shots, I couldn't even feel them.  I didn't really enjoy the finger ******, but I don't mind papercuts anymore!

I spent those three days learning and sleeping a lot.  I learned that hospital food tastes awful! I got a bunch of stuffed animals.

Telling my schoolmates was pretty hard.  But a lot of kids thought it was cool.

Next year, I may be getting a diabetic alert dog (a dog that alerts me about low blood sugars).

I kind of like diabetes.  It brings me closer to my family and who I really am.
