Exploring Homer, Alaska.

This was one of the best trips of my life!!!

I was working for a mining company in Alaska on a 3 in 2 out rotation, they were supposed to fly us out on days off. I decided to skip that and take the opportunity to travel alaska. During the first week of my trip i hitchhiked down the Kenai Penisnsula to Homer (a little drinking town with a fishing problem) and stayed in a hostel. People were really friendly, and gave me the low down on things to do there. I caught a water taxi across to kachemak bay (short ride) and camped on a beach, set up camp and went for a hike. the trail up to the glacier takes you to a tram which you use to cross a river (Dont try to ford it..its deep in places and the waters super cold). not sure how far up to the glacier i was sidetracked by fly fishing for salmon, and didnt have time to make it.

had arranged for a kayak guide from a nearby lodge to pick me up the next morning. we spent 3 hours paddling the coastline, exploring an abandoned community, oyster farm, saw plenty of wildlife (eagles seabirds, otters/ sea lions) and paddled a tidal rapid. topped it off by having a fresh oyster meal at the lodge.

the kenai peninsula is just fantastic, the people are some of the friendliest i have met anywhere, also didnt wait longer than 10 minutes for a ride hitchiking (and met some very interesting people). If you are planning on going to alaska this is a great region to visit (i give it 2 thumbs way up!!!!)
