I Have to Wear Diapers
I was reminded about a time in the scouts and an embarrassing situation when I was about 13 years old. One winter, our troop went on a winter camping trip in Northern Wisconsin. We camped for about 3 nights and 4 days. I wasn't overly concerned about wearing diapers, as I was staying in a tent with my dad (whom happened to be once of the scout leaders) and since it was winter, my diapers were concealed by winter clothes, so the added bulk wasn't too much of a concern.
One afternoon, our troop went on a trek across a frozen lake to a nearby island. There was about 12 to 18" of snow on the ground/lake and we didn't have any issues crossing the lake... except for me, that found that weak spot on the lake and I fell in. Mind you, I didn't fall in completely, but never the less, I was up to my waist in frigid cold water.
One of the scout leaders (my dad was about 1/4 mile ahead of me) asked one of the Eagle scouts to take me back to the camp for me to get changed and warmed up, as they were concerned over hypothermia and what not. At this time I wasn't overly concerned over changing, as I thought I could do this myself in the private of my tent.
This was not to be... I was shaking over the cold and I couldn't even un-button my snowpants and clothes, so this Eagle scout had to help me change out of my wet clothes. After taking off my shirt, snowpants and jeans, I was just down to my cloth diaper and plastic pants... which were just as soaked. I was embarrassed that I was basically lying there in diapers and I was 13 years old.
At this time, I wasn't sure he knew about my issues and plight... but he never said anything negative and just said to me that since I was having a difficult time changing, he'd help me change my diaper. He took out some clean dry diapers, another pair of plastic pants from my bag and proceeded to change me. After I was changed into a dry diaper and I put on some dry clothes, I felt better and thanked him for his assistance. I still had to be wrapped up in a large sleeping bag to ward off the hypothermia.
Not once while he was changing me, did he mention or ask me why I was wearing diapers at my age. I did find out later that my father informed the other leaders and a few Eagle scouts about my bladder problems and that I required the use of cloth diapers and plastic pants. This Eagle scout and I became friends, even though he was about 17 years old... he became a mentor to me and never at any point during our friendship and or in the scouting did he ever tease me over my diaper wearing... although I can't say the same about some of my other fellow scouters... as some of them really couldn't understand or fathom to realize why a kid my age still needed to wear diapers.
