Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion

A personal story in the experience: I Interested In Alternative Energy
T his process has intrigued me for some time. I was trying to explain the principal to a friend as he has had some experience with large turbo fans, being a maritime engineer, and now working in a coal powered power station.

He said it couldn't be done for various reasons. In searching out data on hydro thermoclines (different temperature layers in water) I found some information on OTEC. It has been done, and it does work.

I discussed it with another friend, and we are looking at making a model to promote the idea. He has done some calcs on it, and has approached the CSIRO.

Interesting concept, I enjoy learning about new and innovative way to produce energy.
I, however, live many mile from the ocean and am currently researching and conducting a feasibility study specific to my property regarding wind and solar energy production.

Geothermal may be to big a project for one household.

Try to think about the least number of conversions. Solar energy to heat water and the home via heat banks. Wind for electrical power and cooling.

Something else to consider is the temperature difference between the roof cavity and that under the floor.

I have looked at that idea. There are huge loads on the bearings between each section.

With an OTEC system there is only one moving assembly, the turbine and generator on a common shaft. If the shaft was vertical bearing loads /wear would be minimal. Once running, it should go for years.

The initial cost would be high, so is a nuclear power station. The largest expense would be the vertical tube, 1000 feet long, say 15 feet in diameter.

Please explain in more detail the statement regarding the temperature difference between the roof cavity and that under the floor.
Thanks

Any temperature difference can be utilised for a sterling cycle. That site on OTEC has diagrams, substitute the heat source and cooling medium and use a suitable gas - propane is ideal.
A turbo from a motor vehicle may be good for experiments.

It may be more beneficial to simply use a fan in a duct system to heat the living space. I've used under floor air to cool the living space via a gas central heating system, pulling the temp down by some 8 deg C.
