Pros and Cons of Algae Based Energy

A personal story in the experience: I Interested In Alternative Energy
T hese photos (see link at bottom) shows a recent Algae outbreak on the coast of China. As the earth heats up and rains increase, these kinds of algae blooms in coastal areas will become more and more common. They're a nuisance to fisherman, a threat to ocean life and a costly pain in the neck to local governments. And yet, a friend of mine recently showed me some interesting projects around the world that are seeking to use algae as a primary source for biofuel. The info he showed me indicates that its much more cost effective then corn or palm oils, and unlike these crops it requires no land to be grown. It's kind of like a weed in the ocean, it grows like crazy in almost any location, especially warm water with high nutrient content from farm runoff. There are also interesting projects underway now that are connecting up algae pools and standing cylanders directly to factories, as a way of absorbing their C02 emissions, growing from it, reducing what goes into the sky. When the algae grown is turned into fuel it can be used to create energy for factories as well, so its a kind of recycling. I haven't heard any problems yet with algae, but usually every energy source has some challenges.

Does it work better if I put it here?

I have read about this and saw the CNN report last night. Sounds like a good idea.

Hi SFM. Yeah, I think so too. There are even some algae that produce hydrogen gas, under certain conditions. Think about that!! If they can be genetically modified to produce it all the time, with solar light as the energy input, we'd have a way of creating hydrogen that didnt require other forms of energy.

Marine algae of a certain variety have bodies that are more than 50% lipids (oils) and are extremely productive and would make excellent sources of biofuel.

The great thing is that - as was mentioned - they are easy to grow, they consume co2, they give off oxygen and the dead bodies can be converted to fuel. When you burn it, you are only returning the co2 that the organism removed so there is no NET co2 accumulation.

Petroleum is an ancient version of this buried since the time of the dinosaurs. We are just returning the co2 to the atmosphere that algae removed millions of years ago...when the world had no ice and the oceans were bigger. Sound like a prediction of the future???
