I Know That War Is a Necessary Evil
As long as there are at least three people in the world, there will be war. I don't like it, I don't want it that way, but conflict is an inevitable part of human nature, almost as much as love. Many wars are unnecessary, and most are fought over poor communication. That's what it comes down to in so many cases, the inability of a few leaders to effectively communicate their ideas. Sometimes I think the two warring parties are saying the same thing, but neither can understand the language of the other, and so there is war.
But there are times when it is necessary and honorable to fight. It may be that we must battle to survive, to protect the defenseless, or to bring down a tyrant. It's a beautiful, childlike, and very dangerous world view, to believe that "if we just stop fighting, everyone else will." Some people are just "bad guys." Some people don't care about what's fair, rules, or morals. Some people are insane. It's because of those individuals, that sometimes you have to do something you hate, in order to avoid something you'd hate even more. "Hoping it will go away" can be a deadly and destructive path, which costs more human welfare and life in the end, than standing up for what's right from the beginning. Sometimes, there is no "best option." Sometimes, there is only "the lesser of two evils."
Can you imagine what the world would be like in 2010, if everyone had decided that, "If we just leave Hitler alone, he'll come to his senses." What continued horrors would he have brought upon the people he chose to persecute, and what power might he have gained to bring more suffering on the world? What if Martin Luther King Jr. had kept silent about his belief in the equality of man? He might still be alive and safe, but we might very well still live in a world of segregation and brutality, worse than it is today. Whether you wage physical war or you "fight" peacefully through education and song, the cost of fighting can be devastating. But the cost of submission to dogma and tyranny would be unbearable.
I get so frustrated with "peace protesters" who condemn those of us who understand that there are a few circumstances in which war is unavoidable. They act as if we are "pro war and anti peace."
WHO IN THE HELL WANTS WAR?
NO ONE!
And isn't "peace protester" an oxymoron? Aren't they in effect "fighting" for what they believe?
I get furious with those who would villify soldiers. This elite group of souls are brave enough to defend the principles they hold dear, even at cost of their own lives! They do so, in order that the rest of us should not live in fear and under oppression.
If we are to live in this world as adults, we must accept the good with the bad. If there is immeasurable beauty, sometimes there will be unnatural ugliness. The key is to focus on and strive for all that is good, to work toward a lopsided world where good vastly outweighs evil.
I believe in miracles, so I believe that peace is possible. Until then, let's stand for what is right, do our best not to fight, and very simply, treat one another the way we would want to be treated in our words, thoughts, and deeds.
