Tally Me Banana

Are we all truly free? Can we say we are not bound by society, by gender, by Religion, by culture? Do we have free will and can we choose.

Or are we just floundering between the options we are given. Often we are forced to choose between and apple or an orange when we want a banana. Why do we not seek the banana?

If we are told. Boys eat apples. And girls Eat Oranges, Why can't I have a banana? Is it because we forget the banana because everyone is telling us we MUST choose between an apple and an orange.

If we only look at the choices that are presented to us by the rest of the world, how can we see beyond them, How is that a real choice.

We have to be willing to look past the apples and oranges and reach for the banana.

When I was young I was told, girls can only be, Nurses, teachers or mommies. So what did I want to be when I grew up. I remember thinking as a little girl (well that stinks) And I responded I wanted to be a doctor. (this was before computers, soon as I laid my eyes on a computer that changed)

When I went to school I was told Girls can only be data entry techs or key punchers. And I was asked by my teacher what I planned to be. ( I remember thinking well that sucks) and I responded I want to be a programmer.

It is the same story, Over and over we are presented with options, we are told that is what we must choose between, many of us accept these limitations and forget our dreams of bananas.

I love bananas,I know I love bananas. No matter how many oranges and apples there many be to choose from, I will never stop looking for Bananas.
You ARE PRECIOUS!!!

@ Dex. Too right you are. I have known male nurses who have to suffer through the ignorance of narrow minded people. A gift is a gift. one should not be forced to be limited by gender, religion or culture. To tine own self be true!

Oranges..and not apples..?????? . GOOD for you!!

Great post, Cheeky!

I love bananas too, but am unfortunately unable to indulge in their many delights because they give me migraines.

Your story struck a chord with this Baby Boomer Boy who grew up in an era when Feminism was a nightly news item and the issues of women in the workplace were being openly discussed and dissected. There is still a reinforced Glass Ceiling in many corporations, of course, but thankfully women have access to a far wider range of careers -at least, in the gender-civilised world- than they used to.

Unfortunately, the reverse stereotype still applies: there is a general perception that males are not suited to the pursuit of careers that involve caring. All too often, when a man chooses to work with children, youth, the elderly, or other vulnerable people, his motivations -and usually his sexual orientation- are questioned.

We still have a long way to evolve.

And BTW, Cheeky, I prefer oranges to apples. What does *that* life-style choice say about me?

Brutmystic

It is getting better, but I also see a trend to reverse all of the progress that has been hard won.
it is a sad sad thing. If those people Choose to throw away the simplest of liberties if that makes them happy, so be it., They cross the line when they make that decision for us all and lobby lawmakers to that end.

Right ON! Sad the way girls are programmed. It is getting better though. Great story, btw.

Now I am doing the hippy hippy shake because I heard it is hip to be square.

Well but, about "staying in your place" see, my g.f. once told me...
"HONEY... stay in your place... " we were alone, in a banana dream in a banana island,
and we were very much in love making rhthymns with banana paper hats on our tanned heads...
when... I thought I felt some something... SPECIAL

anyways let me just say... in that particular MOMENT... good advice to STAY IN MY PLACE,
lol,
WHEW... the Love MAKING went on through many jungle nights of passion under the banana trees with banana tasty dishes to give us the strength to go on and again and again... enjoy!!!

Yes... You are right to WARN of the BANANA people other than the apple/orange ones...

THANK YOU.

I am dancing the banana boat special for you.

All hail the banana!!... Oh and "stay in your place" uhhgg *shivers* Who decides what my "place" is.... Who should know my gifts, talents and hearts desire better then me? If everyone stayed in "Their place" nothing would get done!

or plums...... JUCY!!!!!!

How about a lovely bunch of coconuts?? I am with you on this one. I was told I could be a nurse or a receptionist in a Dr.s office but don't even think about becoming a Medical Examiner. By the time I was through med school I was still being encouraged to stay in my place and be a pediatric physician "because we need nice lady doctors for the kids" ...Ugh! I persevered and went for the banana and I'm glad I did!
