Not to mention 500 Australians... and, of course, at least two million Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laotians. And that's just the people who were killed -many millions more were wounded, and the suffering continues, with hundreds every year injured by exploding mines and bombs, and suffering the effects of Agent Orange and other defoliants. LBJ was, in fact, one of history's great mass murderers.

It's a neat enough quote, doggie, and I certainly agree with the first sentence. But the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army may take issue with the second sentence. The Vietnamese waged war for a thousand years to rid their country of the Chinese, and for 80 years to get rid of the French; they would happily have continued fighting the Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, etc for another 50 years.

The entire country was a battlefield, and a huge majority of the Vietnamese population were actively engaged in the fighting. The Vietnam war was 'lost' because it was fought against the Vietnamese, in their own country. The allies 'lost' because they were poorly trained, poorly equipped and poorly led, and because they had no idea who were their enemies.

"He who attacks must vanquish, he who defends must merely survive"......................Five days before JFK was shot, he signed Security Action Memorandum # 263, which was to have begun the process of bringing the American 'advisors" home.....JFK did NOT want to widen the war........Two days after his death,
LBJ reversed JFK's decision to bring the advisors home and instead issued Security Council Memorandum # 273...which greatly increased the number of American soldiers & advisors in Vietnam.....and later, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which was based on lies, was used by LBJ to go to war in Vietnam without getting the consent of Congress...........
As far as McLuhan's remark, the fact is that the American people were able to see the horror going on each night on TV, and that did eventually result in Nixon eventually ending the war........Just think, if JFK had not been assassinated, 50,000 American soldiers would not have been killed!
