In the broadest sense, I disagree. In certain instances, this can be applicable but only in specific situations. If you're being tough with someone just because you can, that's a mindscrew.

I think the quote means that all children grow stronger with a little adversity in their lives. How can you learn to handle difficult situations if you never face them. That's my interpretation.

:) thanks for not taking offense, Tex :). I just believe we naturally encounter adversity... So no need to manufacture it for our children (or anyone else) ... And if nurtured in love (not indulgence, but love) our children have healthy esteem and are well equipped to handle the adversity that organically comes their way.

The whole point of a discussion is to hear and discuss differing opinions. You see the quote as saying make things difficult, I see it as saying don't make things too easy. Just a different viewpoint.
