Mister Was His Name

Mister Was His Name

He was a Great Dane I named him Mister. This dog was my very first friend; he and I were never out of eyesight from one another. he was a gentle dog but god help you if you ever raised a hand to me, he sensed whenever I felt unsure of things and was on high alert to the point of sleeping on top of me. While we were in the fort Mister was by my side. The fort was a blanket that I had put up over the bar in the living room and stapled to the wall. This is where I and mister would sleep. Mister was nothing short of a horse. He was proud and he looked good and he would strut and prance, and if you were lucky he would get Snoopy and show his toy off. Snoopy was a stuffed toy dog that was Misters favorite thing in the world next to me and if you played hide snoopy from Mister, you would lose. You can’t fool Mister when it came to hide and seek snoopy. I got him in Alaska. My birthday present was a choice my own TV, A motorized go cart or A dog. A TV would be nice, a go cart would be cool, but a dog? Hell yea not a hard choice for me. We were a team he and I. I never liked cats and had been attacked many times by those critters. I hated cats and Mister hated them more than I did. My best bud, He was more like a brother than he ever was a pet. I could not begin to explain what time is or how it was measured in these two lives, but it was always a good time until. One day before school I had to get Mister outside to do his business this morning it was cold out and I was in my snowsuit and mister was on his leash. Just as soon as we cleared the walkway from the door to the front of the trailer, there it was. Cat. Now Mister hates cats more than I do and off we go. I had no decision is this foot chase that now had four feet power pulling with me on my stomach holding on for dear life. I could not keep my hold and let go. I came to a sliding stop a few feet later, mister was on the chase. I lost sight of mister and went home. He would return in a min. so I thought. It was much later and he was much worse and in need of help right away or my friend would die. Luckily for me I did not have to see Misters courage or his strength to make it home. How could he have made it home with a front leg broken, bone out, back leg broken bone out, neck from behind his right ear all the way down to his shoulder open and hanging , meat showing ,dripping blood. I am so glad I was not home. The reason Mister did not die that day is because I was not home. Had I been home, my friend would have made it to me and picturing the look on his face would have been “I am really sorry friend and he would have passed right then and there. I’m sure of it”. He got run over by a big truck chasing that cat. I was not there and mister would not leave without licking my face. After convincing the doctors to do whatever it took to save my dog a few days later he was home. Front leg and opposite back leg in casts. Neck shaved and stitched with what looked like a railroad track up his neck to his ear. My step dad wanted him put down and doctors agreed. Hell No. Mom said save him at all costs Fate would have it that the same man I hid from because He never liked me or my dog was now the man carrying Mister in and out of the house to go potty. It was great, that man bitched and screamed at my dog to hurry up and pee but Mister didn't care. I learned later on about Karma and well Mister had to dish some of that back out Someday you may have to help those whom you have hurt, remember that A year or so later we headed on the highway in a station wagon, four kids, mom and uncle driving and of course mister. Mister liked going for rides and he like it so much it gave him gas. Lethal Gas and that went on anytime he was in the car. We survived the 5000 mile journey without tossing him on the road in between Alaska and Arizona. Hot Hot Hot. Mister was a black dog so that made it worse he would not go outside until dark. Older now I understand. But as a boy outside was my life and I wanted to play with my dog out there. Did I tell you Mister hated cats? After his accident and near death experience, he was sleeping on the porch outside. I was in the house and you guessed it a cat. This kitty had shown up at the house and it somehow made its way into my room. I don’t like cats. They don’t like me. I would never hurt any animal just to do so, however I didn’t know but I was about to seal the fate of death with this kitty. Mister was sleeping on the porch. The screen door was latched, locked to where you could get in. Dog could not get out. Without thinking at all about where Mister was I let this cat out the window onto the porch and closed the window. At the exact time I closed the window I remembered Mister, it was too late. I dropped that kitty on Misters head. Now the fight was on. The two of them fighting sounded like lightning and thunder, but Mister was a skilled cat killer and by the time I made it through the house to the porch, it was over. I opened the door and to my surprise was Mister, prancing proud as a peacock with this tiny head in his jaws showing me his catch and kill. Time goes by and Mister gets a girl friend she is a Great Dane as well but way smaller than my friend the stud, he is so smitten that he is jealous even of me. Well it didn't take him long and soon thereafter Mrs. Has pups, 6 of them all die same day but one. she was to young and just a puppy herself but Mister had to ravage her anyway, should have seen the help me look he had when they hooked up and  his cries for help , that’s my pal, I couldn't resist letting him know I had Snoopy and ran through the yard out the gate. The one pup made it 3 days and I accidentally stepped on the poor thing under the blanket Mrs. Had him covered with.  To this day I won’t step on any clothing or anything bunched up on the floor. Well Mom comes home one day with a brand new plan. Save money we need to save money because we are broke. To my surprise it's the dog catcher and he is right out front getting out of his truck. My first thought, Mister what have you done now. Oh if it were that simple. Mom had Mrs. Put in the truck by the dog catcher; she was talking to the man explaining how short of money she was and could not afford to feed them anymore. Them I said. and just like that, the man had my friend in the truck in another cage. I was in total disbelief. Wait a minute. Stop, but by the time I realized what was happening, it was too late. They were gone. I was alone.    Mister anymore?

I never saw Mister again. I will forever remember that summer in 1978 I can’t tell you what happened yesterday but I can tell you everything and more about a boy and his pal Mister

. When life gets hard remember it isn't about giving up and sending the ones away you can’t or don’t want. It’s about being there for one another until the end of life, yours or theirs. Dog is man’s best friend, Wonder how they ever came up with that?
