Feeling Like An Old Fogie

I am a 30 year old mother of 3 children.  For the past 10 years I have listened to the music I listened to when I was a teen.  Every once in a while, I would let a new band in on my favorites list, but it is rare that I listen to the radio or even get out of the house!  So besides Chevelle, AFI, and some gospel stuff, I have listened to the same old, same old for a long time.  Do not get me wrong, I am very passionate about my personal favorites:  Radiohead, Portishead, Ministry, Deftones, Mississippi Mass Choir, Metallica, Alice in Chains.  Lately, I have gone on to lastfm.com and typed in the oldies.  A list of 'Sounds Like' pops up.  I have come across 10 Years, Muse, Red, and even Natacha Atlas.  If you are not into Arabic music, you may not like Natacha, but she is amazing.  I love music with heavy drum beats, but do enjoy softer music too.  I would appreciate any recommendations, because at this time in my life, I am so ready to broaden my horizons.

It's great that you're looking to broaden your musical horizons - I started doing the same thing a few years ago, and I'm glad I broke out of my music box.<br />

I doubt I could give you any better artist recommendations than last.fm could, but progressive metal is a genre that flows naturally from a lot of your tastes.

Radiohead and Portishead...definitely.
