I Look Deeply
What in all of creation holds more wonder and mystery than the night sky? On a clear, dark night thousands of shimmering stars beckon, offering a glimpse into the immense vastness of the universe. Further and further they go, no matter how far out I peer... Deeper and deeper into the cosmos. Their light having journeyed across an ocean of distance and time greets my eyes in this moment, despite having been born ages before the earth had known me. What secrets are held out there, beyond our reach waiting to be discovered? What insight shall the cosmos share with me tonight?
I like to ponder these question alone in the quiet of night's company. How often I've loved to lie back upon the good earth on a cushion of cool grass on a summer night and lose myself in the heavens. I wonder to myself who might be looking back and what they might know of these secrets. Do they see a faint, dim star barely noticeable among its more brilliant bretheren? Do they wonder if someone might be looking back upon them from a tiny world whirling around that distant sun while pondering the same thing?
I look at the moon and think about its timeless waltz with the earth and about seasons, tides and cycles. I ask myself if this dance, this slow waltz has brought about the conditions to make the earth bloom and my life here possible. I ponder the myriad invisible connections abounding in every sphere of existence that create the reality of the universe, as if guided by some wise and unseen hand, forever creating the living masterpiece that is the universe.
