The LifeBox is a small kit for creating a lil' garden or forest. It is the culmination of a number of projects and ideas from my own personal hero and well reknowned mycologist/ecologist- Paul Stamets (fungi.com).
Where? Earth! Plants have their own desires, but this could easily be done anywhere- say... on an apartment's balcony or next to a window indoors.
Why? Well, 'almost' all sentient creatures on Earth enjoy living their lives. With our aggressive expansion and industrial era blow-back (our current global warming predicament).
In our love for life, we humans have over-stepped our boundaries and sometimes unwittingly damaged our only, singular life sustaining home planet. We haven't even colonized Mars or built a moon base and we're going to destroy ourselves out of greed and pride. Earth's current state of affairs are in a bad way, thanks to us; but we're the best equipped to help reverse this.
Yes, you too can help save the world!
How? The Lifebox kit will give you everything you need. Essentially, you sprout some seeds on a special mat and plant mushroom spores on some wet, torn up corrugated cardboard. The seeds with begin to sprout as the mushroom spores form a network of cells, composting the cardboard as food and then growing into the soil around the roots of your plants. As your plants grow, the fungus innoculated soil within your lil' garden will help distribute water and nutrients more efficiently to every single plant through a series of it's cellular structures, which work a lot like the internet does.
Who? Um... you silly! Oh and me and a LOT of people with very high IQs who are making money hand over fist while saving the Earth. Actually, there is a big community of people who bought Lifeboxes and all track their own growths and projects, they're a nice community.
When? No moment like the present :)
While a single Lifebox could potentially become a great forest all on it's own with a little help, many Lifeboxes with lots of help can help in so very many ways. This goes beyond even the simple, wonderful idea of helping an endangered plant/fungus (maybe bugs or animals if your patch was big enough). The fungus spores and seeds will spread even more, helping us restore areas of the world that have been deforested or damaged from man's mistakes.
See, great things do come in lil' packages :D
While Lifeboxes are an awesome idea, if you know someone who knows how to grow mushrooms, maybe they could help you set up something... or you could do it yourself with a lil' research on youtube :)
Hope someone likes this and helps me save the world!
