I Like My Job As A Pca

I've had all kinds of jobs, from a desk job to working at a library to graphics and layouts...but so far, my favorite job is being a personal care assistant.  I got into it by responding to a job posting on Craigslist.  I became a care assistant for a man with spinal muscular atrophy and used a wheelchair.  He was also studying to get his MBA.  My next boss was a college student who was very popular and well-liked by many people.  He also had muscular dystrophy and used a wheelchair.

Yes, I wipe butt.  I see naked handicapped people.  Empty out urinals and stuff.  But seriously, my clients have always treated me with respect and kindness, and I find that I'd rather do gross things at a job that treats me like a valued member, rather than make copies for a job that treats me like poop.

I've been at this job for about 3 years now and I wouldn't change a thing. It taught me more compassion and satisfaction than any desk job.  I learned what true strength and resilience looked like, and how to move past challenges without feeling sorry for one's self (things that people with disabilities must learn in order to succeed in the world).  I've learned that it's possible to work somewhere where the people like you and like what you do and treat you well.  I hope you have similar experiences too.

I think I have a mission in life: to start making EP read more like givesmehope.org or mylifeisaverage.com. Thanks for the compliment! I was trained on the job and most people looking for PCAs aren't picky about gender. It pays about $9-15 an hour depending on your location and the local market for PCAs, but generally I like it better than any, any other job I've had.
