I Fade Away

The noise of the day cannot drown out
the thrum of my heart as your hand lingers
For just a moment longer than neccessary
But the thrum of your heart can be heard over the din
when you speak of her
And I fade away
Perhaps as it should be
Certainly how it has always been
But the familiar feeling does not comfort
It is like the cold of winter
Thawed by the warm spring
Forgotten during the bright summer
Preceeded by the beauty of fall
Yet just as inevitable
It arrives again next year
With its bitter winds
Howling the cruel lament
Of my cold and barren heart
Now ravaged by the same pattern
Of inevitable brokenness
Icy cold to my soul
