Similar polls have been carried out in other countries, and as far as I know, in all of them the greatest compatriot ever was a ruler. I remember Alexander the Great in Greece, King Juan Carlos I in Spain and Salazar (!) in Portugal. Really sad. It seems that people are afraid to think and take decisions by themselves, and like the sheep they look for their shepard to lead them

As The Housemartins said 'It's sheep we're up against'! Too many people are afraid to think or do anything for themselves, without a self-anointed 'leader' telling them what they should think. The thing is with Churchill, the difference between the public perception and the reality is huge.

As a spaniard, I cannot say good words about Churchill either. Truman wanted to remove Franco out of power, but Churchill persuaded him not to.
Thanks for remembering The Housemartins...feel like listening to Happy Hour over and over again.

Yes, he was also an admirer of Italian fascism, seeing it as an antidote to 'communist poison', that was until 'Uncle Joe' came along.....loved the House martins.
