My Ruminations On A Thought From Gandhi

Gandhi once said: If you don't find God in the next person you meet, it is a waste of time looking for him further. My thoughts are that in any tradition, we all represent or are a manifestation of God without being God.  Something divine, something of the cosmos was given to us in order that we have life.   And we can reflect on the wonders of the universe.  A part of that divinity is in everyone you meet, even the lowest.  You may not like what you see all the time, but God has breathed His divinity into each of us; therefore, you must respect that part of the person.  To respect the divinity in each other may temper out judgments, with mercy which is also a divine attribute.

And if we recognize the divinity in all humans, we may recognize the divinity of God's world.  We may take seriously the our fellow creatures are not put here just as objects for our use, but that we have responsibilities to take care of them and leave them a space to develop as their natures allow.  And finally we may recognize the need to respect the planet.  Again, not just as something for our use but as something that lives as do we.
