Pat Benatar - We Belong

This is one of my favorite songs by Pat Benatar. I have listened to this song so many times today because I feel like it is speaking to me. I won't weigh in with my opinion on what the lyrics mean until I have given you guys a chance to comment but let's just say this song is an uplifting and loving song for me.

We belong, we belong to the light

Many times I've tried to tell you
Many times I've cried alone
Always I'm surprised how well
You cut my feelings to the bone
Don't want to leave you, really
I've invested too much time
To give you up that easy
To the doubts that complicate your mind

We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong, we belong
We belong together

Maybe it's a sign of weakness
When I don't know what to say
Maybe I just wouldn't know
What to do with my strength, anyway
Have we become a habit?
Do we distort the facts?
Now there's no looking forward
Now there's no turning back
When you say...

We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong, we belong
We belong together

Close your eyes and try to sleep now
Close your eyes and try to dream
Clear your mind and do your best
To try and wash the palette clean
We can't begin to know it
How much we really care
I hear your voice inside me
I see your face everywhere
Still you say...

We belong to the light
We belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words
We've both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace
For worse or for better
We belong, we belong
We belong together

This is a song about two people who are bound together in a passionate love/hate relationship. The relationship is ancient, majestic, and frustrating in its conflict (thunder, light). Over the years they have allowed themselves to be lulled under the governance of the words they've expressed to each other, the expressions of love, commitment, or an idealism -- which now seem both real and empty at the same time.

Each always seem to have half a foot out the door. But there's no future (no hope) and no escape (no turning back) -- they're stuck for better or for worse.

But then the final verse takes a tender tone. The narrator gives commands, but they are gentle and intended to comfort. They express a hope that the relationship can start fresh. Narrator says that deep down they really do love each other, something you can't realize when you're in the middle of it.

I like to think the final verse is spoken to the doubter on the doubter's deathbed. Close your eyes and try to sleep, to dream. This would suggest the love within their friendship has become clarified now that one was about to die.

And as it turns out, the story of their friendship is that they had stayed friends to the end.

I think it would have been a deeper, though perhaps sadder, song if it had been written more clearly this way.

To me the line "We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder" is something that I do and do not understand at the same time. I'm overwhelmed with feelings and at the same time I do not understand, or can't explain what it means. The rest of the lyrics just echoes this emotion. With a peak on "We belong together". The child choir drives tears into my eyes at the end. I hope to write just a few lines like this in my life.

They are witches who belong to the gods. Given gifts like seeing the future. He constantly "reads" her seeing a bad future so he starts to treat her bad, She gets treated bad so she wants to leave. She doesnt understand what is happening because she loves him. Now theres no looking foward now theres no turning back. So he sleeps all the time to try in fix it in the other relam but when he wakes up he still remembers what he knows and acts like a creep and punishes her for future events even thou she dont know what the hells going on!!!Part2 to come: She gets the strengh to leave then finally figures it out.But its too late so she cries everynight because nothing she can do will ever make him forget...Some gifts are curses in disguise.

I don't see it so much as loving or me, it's a marriage in trouble. There's a lot of hurt, it's hard for her to communicate, but if she could stand up and say what she wants, she's still not sure she would (the whole "weakness/strength" section). Still, they've invested so much... there is a bond between them that is terribly hard to walk away from, and yet a chasm between them that is really hard to face. Better to try to sleep and not think about it for a while....

Interested in your interpretation! :)
To me it seems like 2 people who believe they are soulmates, but their relationship is strained. She feels like he hurts her with things he says. She wonders if he *thinks* they belong, but feels he just 'distorts the facts" and ignores the troubled times. They have put so much into the relationship, she is hating to leave because of all of the time put into it. But she ponders if it is good. he feels like they are fine and in denial. So she hopes they can just start anew each day (wipe the palette clean) because they are in it for better or worse. They struggle and hurt each other but they feel like it is still worth it because they belong together.
Would love to see what you think:)
Also wondering if old lovers?
Or married couple wondering if it is time to break up, but still trying to hold it together.
I like this song.

Me? I think I can only sing Every You and Every me pretty good. The rest of the song. I suck.

Oh yes, when they try to sing out of their range.

Some singer has very stretch voice. How awful?

yes, I like Pat Benatar's voice.

She has a pretty voice.

:) interesting thoughts....

Sounds like she's been dating a Virgo...they're some of the most emotionally confused beings I have ever encountered...and I have the biggest soft spot for them. LOL!

To me it just sounds like disfunctional love. Like a person who has put too much time into a relationship that is inevitably going to end, but still can't let go.
