Most of the time hand holding is just being together / joined / one ... in the mall, in the park, at the zoo, watching TV. But holding hands has a very strong conscious and subconscious undertone of we're going to face/do this together. I'll be with you all the way.

Recently my wife and I enjoyed some snorkeling in fairly deep water. I really doubt that I truly expressed my apprehension as while I've enjoyed snorkeling many times, I've never been comfortable in water where the shallow end isn't a few strokes away. (way to cool and brave to admit that out loud to her) Oddly enough, she held my hand throughout the adventure and it really was the most comfy and wonderfully pleasant snorkeling experience of my life.

As my children began to assert their fierce independence streaks - my hand was no longer sought :( Now, I only have my wife's hand to hold.
