No Honking, Just Waves

When I moved from Vancouver in Washington State to rural Southern Illinois 5 yrs ago I was in for some culture shock. I live way out in the country a few miles outside of a tiny village of only 300 people. One of the first things that struck me was that as I drove down the country roads here nearly every vehicle or tractor that I passed waved at me. Complete strangers! Soon I'd picked up the habit myself and it's become an unconscious habit to wave at passing vehicles. There's little traffic here and honking is rarely heard. The closer you get to the larger nearby towns the waving ceases, but here in the country it's just what people do and a perk of country living.
