Escape and Company
I was a late child, with a huge age gap between me and my siblings. I lived in quite a small town in Ireland in a neighbourhood on which there were not many children to hang around with. With not many children to play with, I retreated to books. I would read throughout my childhood, make up my own endings, write little verses- I fell in love with words, and I fell in love with escaping, having company in the pages of a novel. Each word brought a different world to life. I wasn't an especially good student when studying at school. I only ever done well in literature and managed to study literature at university, at that time I lost my love of reading, ironically, mainly as being forced to read and being given other interpretations. Now, five years on, I am enjoying the freedom of reading again. I prefer to discuss poetry and books with friends than make strange connections that i don't understand with tutors. Now, reading offers so much more, empathy, comfort, calmness, reflection, cleansing and therapy.
