My Life Belongs To My Alcoholic Mother.

A personal story in the experience: I Live With An Alcoholic
I am an adult child of two alcoholic parents.  My parents are separated and have been for just over a year.  Approximately two years ago I purchased a home in my name because my parents' house was in foreclosure.  I did it for my parents to "help" them out, but it made a nightmare out of my life.  My father left after two DUIs and a criminal trespass charge.  He is in AA now, but I am stuck living with my mother.  She is terribly dependent, manipulative, hateful, and blameful all at the same time.  I am 28 years old, and I feel as though my life does not belong to me.  I cannot make decisions for me because I must always consider her.  She does not work and collects supplemental security income from the government.  The house I bought was to accomodate my parents, but it needs so much work I cannot sell it right now.  I feel so stuck.  It is difficult for me to make choices in my career and relationships.  I hate that I have given my life away.  There are so many details I could share, but sometimes I think, why bother?  The story gets harder to share.  I am sick of living in chaos and craziness.  She is mentally ill as well.  I wonder if my life will ever be my own.  I hate that when I am even older I will look back and realize how much of my life I gave up to her.

Feeling sad

Your story fills me with anguish for you. Can you talk to a doctor or counsellor? You are enabling their sicknesses!

For one thing, you should make them pay rent that you could set aside to pay for repairs on the house. Your father should offer to help in some way.

Don't let your mother tell you what to do. You are a grown up woman! You have your own life. Don't give her that power. You have the power to stop this.
