was out of the office on Friday for medical testing. Sunday I had a vm at home from one of our company VP's requesting I call her at home as she wished to speak with me before work on Monday. Of course, our company has been downsizing like crazy so I knew what she was going to tell me. But still I was in denial because 1) I am an extremely good worker, and 2) I just received an e-mail out of the blue from the VP I report to directly telling me "I appreciate your hard work and dedication". Evidently he knew what was coming.
To make a long story short I am 61 years old and have been working since I was 18 (was only with this particular employer for a little over 2 years). I have NEVER been laid off or fired. Even with the downsizing I was not expecting to be "laid off" and really feel that it was as much a result of some health problems I have had which have caused me to miss more work than I usually would . . . but I was taking the time without pay. Also, only one other person at our location knows how to do the job I did and she is in a totally different position now. I am livid...not to mention frightened.
I wish there were some way I could PROVE they let me go due to my health as it does not in any way prevent me from doing my job. And at my age I can't see anyone jumping to hire me. And I desperatly need my health benefits...and I will most likely NOT be able to afford COBRA benefits as I know my unemployment will be a paltry sum.Anyone have any suggestions for me?
