Laura Jane Grace Gabel

"And if I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman
My mother once told me she would have named me Laura
I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her"

These are the words from the Against me! song "The Ocean" written by the then Thomas Gabel. They were a sort of prelude to the Thomas we know today, a woman by the name of Laura.

Laura came to terms with being Transgendered at a young age, like myself.  Ashamed and harassed for her feminine tendencies in a male form, he was not exactly popular.

Eventually, Laura found her passion, Punk Music.  Writing and playing, listening and plotting, Laura found a way to distract from her gender identity issues, a path that, like many members of bands, includes drug use (unfortunately.)

Laura came out of the darkness in May 2012, after being inspired by a fan of her band who was also Transgendered.

Rollingstone had a featured article on the subject.

Laura herself has widespread support from many well-known people including...

  • Brian Fallon of another Punk Band, Gaslight Anthem

  • Brenden Kelly of the Lawrence Arms and The Falcon, both Punk Bands

  • Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, a very famous band with Punk, Rap, and Techno roots.

  • Mitch Andrew Clem, an American Cartoonist ("Nothing Nice to say," "San Antonio Rock City," "My Stupid Life")

  • The WWE Champion CM Punk

This is from Wikipedia, verbatim.
"Herndon Graddick, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, hoped that Gabel's public profile would increase public awareness and acceptance of transgender people: "Tom is displaying extraordinary courage by coming out as transgender after already establishing herself as a rock star. For many of the band's fans, this may be the first time they're actually thinking about transgender people and the bravery it sometimes takes in order to be true to yourself."

All the while, Laura is maintaining a relationship with her wife Heather, and plans to raise their three year old daughter Evelyn.

This is not only everyone with Transgender Dysphoria's dream...  But shows to be true to yourself, and people will accept you.
