A Small Rescue

I was working in the garage today, setting up pulleys to hoist canoes/kayaks out of the way when I heard a buzzing. Evidently a hummingbird investigated something red in the garage and became confused. Hummingbirds instinctively fly up when they feel trapped or to escape and so it was bouncing up at the ceiling, agitated and panicked.

In that situation you have about an hour before these wonderful little birds run out of energy and die. Opening all the windows and doors did no good - it was confused and would just hover around at the ceiling, ignoring the openings that were lower down. After a while I saw that it was tiring, landing on lines that are strung up around the garage and then proceeding to hover listlessly. Yet, I could not catch it to set it free.

Luckily I have a hummingbird feeder. I shut all the doors and placed the feeder near what I saw as its flight path. As I continued my work I saw that the little hummingbird was feeding and getting back some energy. Finally, I opened a garage door partway and put the feeder in the entrance. After more of its confused flight the hummingbird went to the feeder, ate a little and then flew away, out of the garage.

I am happy that the beautiful little bird did not die.
