Patience....ugh! Not my strong suit but will give it a go. My husband is home two days a week so compared to yours, my schedule is much easier! He can't wait to be breastfed but is way more patient than I. He is enjoying the process! I just got my pump yesterday and started. Keep me posted!!!

Thanks for the information. I am a stay at home mom of three and find this whole process and little strange. I really do look forward to the nursing part so I better get the pumping started along with the herbs. Can a person od on herbs? I really am impatient and want the milk to start producing.

LOL! I know what you mean. I'm not sure if you can od on herbs. Keep this in mind so you won't be dissappointed. Unfortunately it takes time so patience has to be used. My husband is actually more impatient than I am. He just can't wait for the milk to flow but we are enjoying the process. At least the nursing part. When he's not home it's a lot of work for me and probably be the same for you. How often does he get to be home. It's 2 or 3 weeks before I get to see my hubby. I am taking fenugreek and it says take one at a time up to 6 times a day with food. You might want to check out the website www.breastnotes.com. It's very informative. It's nice having a fellow trucker wife interested in this. :)

You actually CAN OD on herbs....treat herbs like drugs, only purchase ones from reputable sources - did I mention 'treat them like drugs'? Keep in mind that a variant (salicylic acid) of the active ingredient in aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), which can easily kill you if you take too much, came from a plant; we have an entire class of chemotherapy agents (the vinca alkaloids) that come from plants...

There are also herbs (St. John's Wort is a big one) that can interfere with the actions of certain drugs and worsen their effects (you can't take SJW with antidepressants - you can become more depressed!).

Not trying to be an alarmist; I'm a nurse practitioner and just want people to remain safe. There are plenty of reputable sources to check herbal interactions. And if you're taking herbs, tell your MD/NP the truth so they don't inadvertently prescribe something for you that could become dangerous in light of what else you're taking. ;)

Just friendly and unsolicited advice. Sorry if I went overboard. I've taken fenugreek and several others myself with no harm done, but I just want people to be careful.

My husband is a truck driver too and wants to breastfeed. I am on the fence but willing to try. What do you do with the milk when he is gone? How do you do this discreetly without having your kids think you are weird?

Hi. As of right now I don't have any milk but still working on it. I have been thinking about what to do with the milk when he is gone. You can throw it away I guess but breast milk can also be frozen if you would like to keep it. I've heard of people cooking with it also. I guess i will just see when it finally comes in.
I hide out. My youngest is 13 so he pretty much keeps himself occupied. My biggest challenge is doing this at work without everyone else knowing. I mean if you're in the bathroom for more than 10 minutes every couple of hours people start to notice and think somethings wrong with you. Right? At least that's how I feel. I may just be paranoid. :) Since my husband is gone so much it has been a challenge. Actually a lot of work, but it has been worth it. We really enjoy our time together even more when he is home. Actually his home time is way too short. It just flies by. I don't know if that answered you questions very well. But if I can be of any help or u just want someone to talk(write) to I'm here off and on Monday -Friday.

No one will ever question a female who goes into the bathroom with her purse. I have a Medela Swing and I use it at work all the time, five minutes a side, about every two to three hours when I can. No, it's not very long, but so far it's been effective. Just act as though you're going about your business; they might think things to themselves, but I really don't believe anyone notices.

Some of the B vitamins,if I remember right, but mostly the herbal supplaments,if you go to ebay,do a search for mother love More Milk, these are drops that you take a few times a day,and it really does help a lot.But mainly the biggest thing is,keep the stimulation going, about every 2 hours,be it nursing, expressing,or pumping. And dont ask me why or how,but a 3 in the morning session will do absolute wonders, sometimes its kinda a pain to wake up around three, but is sooo worth it in the long run.Good luck,.and happy nursing !

thanks for the info. I have been expressing every 3 hours including midnight and 3 in the am which is a miracle that I'm able to get up at that time. I'm feeling exhausted but feel it is definitly worth it. The every three hours has been hard since I have a full time job.

Please don't buy vitamins and supplements off of eBay! You have no idea what you're getting. I get More Milk from the local Whole Foods. I've ordered Goat's Rue through them as well (you can get it in capsules; the liquid is NASTY!). The early morning sessions/middle of the night sessions work so well because of hormone levels that shift during sleep.

There are different herbs and herb concoctions to help your milk come back, mother milk tea is good, and most wally-worlds carry that, goats rue is another herb that is good, and you can find several different concoctions on ebay to help induce milk.My wife and I started nursing a few months ago,and while it took a while to get her milk flowing again, now its supply and demand,if I drink a lot, that much will be produced,if I only use a little, milk will start falling. But it is so worth the time and trouble,my wife and I enjoy it emmensily, and it has brought us much closer

Thanks so much. We are really looking forward to him nursing. these are herbs I hadn't heard of. I also need to see about taking a prenatal vitamin I believe. Did your wife take any type of vitamins?

You should definitely take a prenatal. Milk production uses calcium, and if you don't replace it, your body will look for it elsewhere (read: your bones!). Check out kellymom.com for all sorts of good advice on how to eat when you're nursing. Advice that goes for nursing moms is equally good for us.
