I Love Cities At Night
Thousands and thousands of bright yellow orbs, shapes, and pinpricks, suspended in a completely dark sky -- it is mesmerizing, meditative even. The sharp contrasts are instant magnets, aren't they? Like glowing sparkles at a great distance, and strong neon patterns up close. What does the shape of bright and dark windows in a tower at night suggest or symbolize? Come up with a metaphor for a downtown skyline or cityscape.
In 1990, I was on a long flight home at night, from Las Vegas, NV, to Calgary, AB, then on to Edmonton. It was a cloudy night, but as I gazed down through my window, there were gaps in the clouds through which I saw cities' night-time sprawl, before they vanished again as the jet continued its journey. Those thousands of lights were breathtaking, like spots of magic being weaved below me. I was dead tired, too, and dopey on Gravol, which probably helped my euphoric feeling as I beheld those metropolis's glowing from so high up.
