Exposed In The BarracksDuring my first year in college , I was a cadet in Army ROTC. In it, once a year, we did something called 'field training exercises' which was pretty much considered an awesome time of running around in the woods for a week with M16s loaded with blanks while volunteers hunted you and your platoon down and you tried your best to outmaneuver them. We also got to fire many different types of weapons and do those leadership/team building types of courses; that part of the trip was a lot of fun.
I'm assuming in the real Army, women would have their own separate barracks, but in our group there was 6 to 8 girls to every 100 guys. The instructors decided that we were just too small in numbers to make any special accommodations for us and they left it up to the cadet officers to make arrangements within their individual barracks however they wanted to handle us.
In the building I was in, the bathroom facilities were already pretty horrible for privacy purposes, even if it had only been guys using them. There was two rooms, one toilet room and one shower room, neither of which had doors and the place where there should have been a door was just a big gap in the wall. The shower room was especially bad as the empty door spot was pretty wide; around four doors or so across.
Neither of these rooms had even the tinniest bit of privacy. No stalls in either, just wide open rooms. The toilet side was just toilets and sinks (I was actually surprised that there were mirrors above the sinks). There was no divisions or anything else in there. I've never been to a bathroom like that before, nor have I seen one like that since. The shower room wasn't that unusual I suppose, but normally you only see a room with just shower heads like that in gender segregated bathrooms. When I first saw these rooms, I naturally assumed it would be worse using the toilet room over the shower room; girls don't have urinals or anything like that, we can't normally see each other doing that kind of thing like guys can see each other. So I was dreading the toilet room more, but man was I freaked out about entirely the wrong thing.
The cadet leaders in charge decided to take their ponchos and some string and built a make shift barrier across each doorway. Guys were given a half hour to shower, girls were given five minutes. In a way we were luckier then the guys since we could each have our own shower head and didn't have to fight for a space, but it was still a pretty horrible experience.
The ponchos you see, were only effective if the guys were respectful and kept their distance from the doorway. The way they were strong up, they weren't tall enough to completely cover us from view if someone were to walk by and look over them. And that's just what several guys did each time we showered. They would try and play it off like they had to get something on the other side of the barracks (the facilities were in the center, dividing the large room in half), but we could see them leering at our bodies, checking us out.
At the time I was still a virgin, so I found it especially embarrassing... I think that besides my cousin peeking at me one time, that was the first time I had ever experienced a male's gaze on my fully grown and naked body. And at least my cousin had been family so it wasn't all that bad really. These guys were pretty much strangers too me and and the other girls and we were repeatedly fully exposed to them.
My chest is a bit on the big side too, so trying to hide at the same time while trying to get my hair washed proved rather difficult when you consider we had a five minute time limit. I started each shower trying to keep my body as hidden as possible, but when they're yelling out that you only have two minutes left and you've barely soaped up yourself, you give up on preserving any modesty you may have been able to scrounge up and just frantically wash. At that point I'm sure our audience got more then an eye full of us. And even before when we were trying to keep our fronts covered, protecting our butts was completely impossible. It was really quite horrible.
None of us wanted to complain to an instructor; the guys were already kind of iffy towards us anyways and the last thing we wanted was to draw more attention to the fact that we were girls in a pretty much guy dominated world. It was like we were cornered into putting on this show every night.
I think the scariest thing for me was that I was too embarrassed to look at them when they were looking at me, so I could never see the ex
We talked in the beginning about all of us girls just skipping shower time after that first night, but we decided that with all the running around we were doing out in the heat, and literally crawling on our stomachs through the forest, we really had to have the short showers that we were being allowed, otherwise we'd get reputations as being smelly and dirty.
The toilet room, at least, wasn't quite so bad. We would just hold it and wait for lights out and all the guys to be asleep to go and use it. The door way was smaller so they were able to use the poncho length wise so that it covered the whole door. Hanging from a string was a piece of note book paper that you were supposed to flip depending on what gender was using the facilities. The problem with that was the guys never bothered to check the paper, so we were often walked in on, but shorts around your ankles was still easier to take then the full on nudity during shower time.
