I Love Foreign Films
I watched this movie because the description said it was about a father who comes back after 12 years. My son is 10 years old and his father is out there somewhere and so I wanted to see what it would be like. As I watched the movie, I realized my son is a lot like the youngest of the two, Ivan. He is not a follower and sticks to his own ideas and beliefs and he is also a mommy's boy so, of course the movie pulled me in as it developed.
I like Russian writing, it is brainy and somewhat dark and this is what I liked about the movie. The father comes back after 12 years but the children never really get a solid explanation of why he has been gone so long and it is really left for the viewer to interpret why by watching what he does and where he goes and picking up a few comments here and there.
I think the dynamics between the father and my son would probably be the same as with Ivan. It was hard for me to watch the fishing trip, although by the time they crossed to the island, I understood what the father was trying to do and I saw him more like a father and i saw the kids mostly as bratty kids, still it was hard from a mother's point of view. A mother who does not physically punish and who is always ready to support and ready to encourage.
By the end of the film, it was heartbreaking to hear Ivan screaming "papaaaaa", his mind and his heart had finally accepted him as a father and yet...
I also noticed all of the things they learned from the father in such a short time that they actually had to use to get out of the island and go back home. The photography here is also beautiful.
I am happy the way things are in my life though. I think my child doesn't need to go from white to black from one day to another. There was no need for that. I can see how psychologically it can be so stressful for a child.
